Marshallnet Dial-up Connection on Macintosh

[Macintosh]How to Setup a Connection to Marshallnet on Macintosh

Step 1


Computers running Apple's OS 8.x + have a built in program called the Internet Setup Assistant. This Assistant will setup the computer for Internet Access. Read through the instructions below for how to run the Assistant to connect to Marshallnet.

Open the Internet Setup Assistant

Pull down the Apple menu to Internet Access, in the menu that appears, select the Internet Setup Assistant option. If you don't have the Internet Setup Assistant here, you will need to search for it using the Find command.

Start the Assistant
Once you have the Internet Setup Assistant window, you will be asked, Would you would like to setup your computer to use the Internet? Answer Yes.

On this screen, you will be asked, 'Do you already have an Internet Account?' Yes you do. Answer Yes.

Step 3


Gather the Necessary Information. This screen will let you know what information you need to complete the Internet Setup Assistant. This tutorial will give you all the information you need except for your username and password. Those you should have written down from when you called in and signed up for your account. Once you are ready to begin, click the right hand arrow in the lower right corner of the window.

On this screen you can name the connection. The name is not all that important, it just allows you to tell apart multiple connections. It also allows you to select the method you are using to connect to the Internet. The instructions on this page are for using a Modem connection. What would you like to name this configuration? Marshallnet This box allows you to name the settings you are about to type in. To change Internet Settings after running the Internet Setup Assistant go to the Internet Control Panel. How will you be connecting to the Internet? Leave this set to Modem. When complete, click the right hand arrow in the lower right corner of the window.

Step 5


This screen of the Internet Setup Assistant is for configuring the modem you will use to connect to the Internet. If you have a Macintosh computer that came with a modem installed from Apple (Such as the iMac or PowerBook G3 series) this screen will often already be setup for you.

This menu allows you to select the modem you use to connect to the Internet. The port menu allows you to select how your modem is connected to your computer. Select the choice that describes your setup. Does you phone line use tone or pulse? If your phone line does not support touch tone dialing, set this to Pulse, otherwise leave it on Tone. Ignore dial tone: If you have a nonstandard dial tone, you can turn this option on to allow your modem to dial anyway.

Step 6


This screen of the Internet Setup Assistant is for setting the dialup information needed to connect to Marshallnet.

Local Access Number: This is where you enter the phone number your computer dials to access the Internet. Be sure to verify the number you dial is a local call with your local telephone company. For a list of Access numbers please click on the Access Numbers link. The Marshalltown local access number for Marshallnet is 753-4010.

Log-in name or user ID: This is where you enter your username. Usernames must be entered in all lower-case letters, with no spaces. You username is that same as your email address.

Password: This is where you enter your password. Passwords with Marshallnet are Case-Sensitive and should be typed all lower case.

Step 7


This Screen of the Internet Setup Assistant asks if you need PPP Connect Scripts when connecting. The answer is No.

This screen of the Internet Setup Assistant asks if you have a static IP address with your ISP. Answer No.

Step 9


This screen of the Internet Setup Assistant is for setting up the Domain Name Servers for your connection. This is a very important step. The DNS settings are what allow your computer to find anything out on the Internet. If they are not entered correctly, your computer may be able to connect, but not go anywhere.

What is the DNS address (or addresses) for this configuration? Enter 207.206.203.2 on the first line, then press the Return key on your keyboard to get to the second line. Enter 207.206.203.6 on the second line.

What is the Domain Name (or host name) for this configuration? Enter marshallnet.com in this box.

Step 10


This screen of the Internet Setup Assistant is for setting up how your computer will deal with email.

What is the email address for this configuration? Enter your username@marshallnet.com here. The email address (like all Internet Addresses) must be entered without any spaces in it, and should be all lowercase.

What is the email password for this configuration? Enter your password again, exactly the same as you did earlier on. Once again, all passwords are are Case-Sensitive and must be typed in lowercase. What is the quoting character you would like to use? Leave this set to >.

This screen of the Internet Setup Assistant is for setting up how your computer will deal with email.

What is the email account for this configuration? The email account setting is very different than the email address. The email account should be setup as your username@marshallnet.com in all lower-case letters with no spaces.

What is the email host for this configuration? This is the address of Marshallnet's mail server. It should be set to smtp.marshallnet.com in all lower-case letters with no spaces.

Step 12


This screen of the Internet Setup Assistant is for setting up how your computer will access the Internet news groups.

What is the news group host for this configuration? Enter news.marshallnet.com in all lowercase letters with no spaces.

Step 13


This screen of the Internet Setup Assistant is for setting up if your computer uses a proxy server. Marshallnet does not use a proxy server. The answer is No.

Step 14


This screen of the Internet Setup Assistant is the final screen. If your computer is connected to a phone line that is not in use, you can connect immediately just by pressing Go Ahead. If you don't wish to connect right now, uncheck the box labeled Connect when finished and then click Go Ahead. If you want to double-check the settings you typed in, click the Show Details button. Once you click Go Ahead your computer is setup to access the Internet.

When you have returned to your desktop and want to get on the internet you must double-click on either Browse the Internet or Internet Explorer.
